I wanted to do a folk album. I really did.

This is Fancy Holograms, my first solo album. I did everything here, vocals, instruments, mixing and mastering. This album tells stories. Stories that I imagined -  a grunge singer hologram’s singing at a football event - and stories that I lived - stealing a painting and getting caught.  

My idea was to create simple music: some guitar here, at little vocal track there, nothing fancy. Once I had all that on record, it felt like I needed to spice things a little bit. So I added some keyboards, and then I wanted to put some drums, and then I wanted those drums to sound weird, and then I added some voice modulations, and then I flooded the bass with distortion, and so on and so forth. In the end, it does not sound much like a folk album. I guess it sounds like a Pierre Paul album.

Je voulais faire un album folk. J’ai vraiment essayé.

Voici Fancy Holograms, mon premier album solo. J’ai tout fait sur ce disque, les voix les instruments, le mix et le matriçage. Sur cet album, je raconte des histoires. Des histoires que j’ai imaginées - l’hologramme d’un chanteur grunge qui chante à la mi-temps d’un match de football - et des histoires que j’ai vécues - voler une peinture et me faire prendre. 

Mon idée était de faire de la musique simple, un peu de guitare, un peu de voix, rien de trop élaboré. Une fois les premières pistes enregistrées, j’ai voulu mettre un peu de piquant. D’abord j’ai voulu ajouter des claviers, ensuite j’ai voulu mettre de la batterie, ensuite j’ai voulu que la batterie sonne étrange, ensuite j’ai voulu moduler la voix, ensuite j’ai voulu distortionner la basse, etcetera, etcetera. Résultat: l’album ne sonne pas folk. J’imagine qu’il sonne comme un album de Pierre Paul.
